Filmmaker Taika Waititi defended his screen adaptation of Klara and the Sun on Instagram after the movie received negative reviews and weak box office results, according to reports by Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and Variety. Waititi highlighted the film's 78 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes while calling critics sad lost souls, irrelevant, out of touch, and obsolete. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

The outlets reported that the director claimed he has not read a review in almost 15 years, but said he listens to the audience. Outlets differed slightly on the exact figures, with Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and Variety noting a 28 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Deadline film adaptations reported the critics score was 26 percent and noted the audience score had shifted to 73 percent. [1][2][3]

Set in a dystopian future, the film stars Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams. The film is adapted from the eighth novel by Japanese-British author Kazuo Ishiguro, which was published on March 2, 2021, and longlisted for the Booker Prize, as FTMQ Books reported earlier. [2][10][11]

Variety reported that the 28 percent rating is the lowest score yet for the New Zealand filmmaker, who previously directed Jojo Rabbit and won an Academy Award. [3][8]
