Universal Pictures has released Other Mommy, a horror feature based on the 2024 novel by Josh Malerman. IndieWire and The Hollywood Reporter both report that the film is directed by Rob Savage and stars Oscar-winning actress Jessica Chastain alongside Jay Duplass. The story focuses on an eight-year-old girl named Bela, played by Arabella Olivia Clark, who is confronted by a sinister entity emerging from her closet that takes the form of her mother. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the film collected 3.6 million dollars from Thursday previews as it opens in 3,200 North American theaters. The production carried a budget of 19 million dollars and Universal Pictures projects a 20 million dollar opening weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Variety Film adds that producers Jason Blum and James Wan noted the film achieved massive box office success despite negative reviews. [1][4]

Film critics have offered mixed to poor reviews following the release. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the title holds an 18 percent critical approval score, calling it a flimsy supernatural chiller. Collider described the adaptation as derivative, while IndieWire described it as a hypnotic, dreamcore horror featuring a intense performance from Chastain. [2][4][5][7]

During a 90-minute presentation at New York Comic-Con, Blumhouse Atomic Monster showcased its upcoming slate of projects, Variety Film reported. Studio head Jason Blum addressed the controversial title during the panel. The company is also preparing a new installment in the Exorcist franchise starring Scarlett Johansson, according to Variety Film. [1]
