Taika Waititi debuts film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro novel in New York

Director Taika Waititi has premiered his film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's dystopian novel Klara and the Sun in New York. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Waititi brought the film to New York City alongside cast members Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams. The film follows Ortega as the titular robotic Artificial Friend, who waits in a store alcove hoping to be purchased by a customer. [1][4]

According to Deadline, Klara is ultimately chosen by a child named Josie, played by Mia Tharia. Josie's mother Chrissy, portrayed by Amy Adams, shows hesitation about purchasing an older model of the product when newer versions are available. Deadline and NME both report that the film's soundtrack incorporates piano concertos and multiple record tracks that Josie plays in her room, including songs by the band Violent Femmes. [1][5][6]

The film is based on Kazuo Ishiguro's eighth novel, which was published on March 2, 2021. Set in an unspecified future in the United States, the dystopian science fiction story is narrated from the perspective of Klara, a solar-powered companion chosen by a sickly child. The book was longlisted for the 2021 Booker Prize. The soundtrack features the American folk punk band Violent Femmes, who were founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. [8][9]

Waititi told the Belfast Telegraph that he enjoys making light of human behaviour and the choices people make. The production represents the latest screen treatment of Ishiguro's literary output as the movie enters its promotional cycle following the New York debut. [2][4]
