Japan's animation industry reached record sales in 2025, expanding 15.8 percent from the previous year. The Association of Japanese Animations announced the figures during an annual session at TIFFCOM, the content market attached to the Tokyo International Film Festival. Outlets reported total sales ranging from $28 billion to $28.5 billion, or 4.45 trillion yen to 4.5 trillion yen. [1][2][3]

Overseas markets generated well over half of the industry's total revenue. The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and Deadline Film Adaptations all reported that overseas revenue reached approximately $16 billion, representing nearly 57 percent of the market. Domestic revenue contributed around $12 billion, accounting for roughly 43 percent of overall sales. [1][2][3]

The latest figures encompass all sources of industry revenue, including streaming rights, box office returns, television distribution, and merchandising rights. The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline Film Adaptations noted that global releases, such as the latest Demon Slayer film, served as major drivers for international and domestic market expansion. [1][3]

Hasegawa Masahiro, the editor in chief of the annual Anime Industry Report published by the Association of Japanese Animations, presented the preliminary figures on October 30. The association is scheduled to release the finalized dataset in its complete annual industry report. [1][2]
