The 54th New Delhi World Book Fair will open at Bharat Mandapam on 16 January 2027, but many small Indian-language publishers may not attend. Local Samosa reported that stall costs have increased significantly. Reports from The Telegraph, carried by National Herald, show that the standard charge for the smallest Indian-language stall has risen 120 per cent to Rs. 38,940. Organisers from the National Book Trust have also introduced a rule requiring applicants to submit covers of two recently published books, which some publishers have questioned. [1]

The price increases follow a successful event in 2026. Local Samosa reported that entry to the 2026 fair was free for the first time. Attendance rose by about 20 per cent during that event, and the National Book Trust stated that its own sales increased by 30 per cent. [1]

The event is one of India's major publishing trade gatherings. Hosted at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, the New Delhi World Book Fair is India's second oldest book fair after the Kolkata Book Fair. The inaugural event took place from 18 March to 4 April 1972, covering roughly 6,790 square metres with 200 participants, and was inaugurated by then President of India V. V. Giri. [4]

The financial strain on small publishers in India comes amid broader international concerns about industry margins. As FTMQ Books reported earlier, publishers at the Frankfurt Book Fair recently debated falling profit margins across global markets alongside the expansion of digital platforms and artificial intelligence.
