Swedish author and climate academic Andreas Malm has been barred from entering the United Kingdom, according to reports by The Bookseller and Literary Hub. He was traveling to speak on a panel alongside Huda Ammori, the co-founder of Palestine Action. Literary Hub reported that UK authorities denied him entry because his presence was not considered conducive to the public good. [1][2]
The Bookseller and Literary Hub both reported that Malm was scheduled to speak at an event alongside the Palestine Action co-founder. Literary Hub noted that the UK classified Palestine Action as a terrorist organization last year. The Bookseller stated that it has contacted the Home Office for further comment regarding the decision. [1][2]
Malm works as an associate professor of human ecology at Lund University in Sweden and has described himself as a Marxist. He is the author of several political and ecological works published by Verso, including How to Blow Up a Pipeline: Learning to Fight in a World on Fire, The Destruction of Palestine Is the Destruction of the Earth, and Fighting in a World on Fire. His earlier academic writing includes the 2016 book Fossil Capital: The Rise of Steam Power and the Roots of Global Warming. [1][7][9]
The Bookseller noted that Malm has previously faced criticism for comments he made following the October 7 terror attacks in Israel, including remarks made during a lecture in December 2023. [1]
