Best-selling American author James Patterson has donated more than 220 million dollars to support literacy and education programs, The Times of India reported. His funding targets readers, teachers, writers, libraries, and independent booksellers. According to details published on his official Giving Back page, the donations also endow more than 1,000 college and university scholarships across the United States. [1]
Patterson began his career as a creative director at advertising firm J. Walter Thompson before transitioning to writing full-time. His debut novel, The Thomas Berryman Number, won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel in 1976. Over his career, Patterson has authored or co-authored more than 200 novels, including the Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, Women's Murder Club, and Middle School series. [2][4]
Patterson's publishing model often relies on detailed outlines provided to co-writers who execute the prose, allowing an output of up to 15 to 20 books per year. His titles have sold more than 425 million copies worldwide, and he was the first author to sell one million e-books. Forbes named him the highest-paid author in 2016, with an annual income reaching 95 million dollars and a total decade income estimated at 700 million dollars. [2][4]
The author's philanthropic strategy broadly addresses the entire reading ecosystem rather than focusing on a single institution or age group, The Times of India reported. His funding remains one of the largest personal financial commitments to literacy and bookselling infrastructure by a contemporary trade author. [1]
