Kirkus Reviews announced the winners of the 13th annual Kirkus Prize at a ceremony in New York City, Literary Hub reported. WKMG and WTOP News reported that author Tayari Jones won the Kirkus Prize for fiction for her novel Kin. The award includes a 50,000 dollar cash prize. [1][4][6]
The annual awards honor books of exceptional merit in three categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, and Young Readers Literature, Literary Hub reported. Winners were selected from all books that received a starred review from the publication over the past year. The eligible pool included 3,584 fiction titles, 2,806 nonfiction titles, and 3,936 young readers titles. [1]
The Kirkus Prize was established in 2014 by the book review magazine Kirkus Reviews, which was founded in 1933 by Virginia Kirkus. The prize awards a total of 150,000 dollars annually, split equally among three writers. It is considered one of the most lucrative prizes in literature and does not charge submission fees, allowing both traditionally published and self-published authors to qualify. [7][8]
To be eligible for the award, books must earn a Kirkus Star, which is the highest designation for outstanding quality from the publication. Editors nominate starred titles published between November 1 of the prior year and October 31 of the award year, or October 1 to September 30 for picture books. [8]
