Stephen King Named Most Banned Author in United States Public Schools Again

Novelist Stephen King was named the most banned author in United States public schools for the second year in a row, PEN America reported. The advocacy group released its annual report on school book censorship on October 5, 2026. PEN America and pen.org both confirmed that King topped the list of banned writers once again. [1][8]

The latest report comes alongside broader data from PEN America detailing a record number of book bans across the country in 2026. According to AOL.com, the organization stated that artificial intelligence is accelerating the trend of book removals from school libraries and classrooms. [2][9]

King, an American author known for his work in horror, suspense, and science fiction, has published approximately 200 short stories alongside dozens of novels. Banning books represents a form of censorship driven by political, legal, moral, or religious motives to restrict free access to printed works. [10][11]

The announcement coincides with ongoing commercial interest in the author's body of work. Collider Book Adaptations reported that season two of the television adaptation of King's thriller novel, The Institute, will premiere on MGM+ on November 8, 2026. [3]
