Anne Carson wins 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

Canadian author Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, according to reports from Publishers Weekly and The Washington Post. The Washington Post reported that Carson received the award for bold and inventive works that blend genres. New York Times Books and the Iceland Monitor also confirmed her win. [1][3][6][7]

The award marks two consecutive years of Nobel literature wins for Carson's publisher, New Directions. New York Times Books reported that fourteen authors published by the small press have now received the Nobel Prize in Literature. [1][2]

As FTMQ Books reported earlier, Carson had emerged as a leading contender alongside Chinese writer Can Xue, with odds of 10/1 at Ladbrokes. The 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature carries an award value of 12 million Swedish krona, which is equal to approximately 1.15 million United States dollars. [14]

Carson previously won the T. S. Eliot Prize for her 2001 poetry collection, The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos. She joins previous Nobel laureates in literature, including South Korean author Han Kang, who was awarded the prize in 2024. [11][14]
