Books written by Irish author Sally Rooney have been withdrawn from the United Kingdom market, according to Monthly Review, NPR, and Al Jazeera. The decision follows Rooney's public support for the group Palestine Action. [1][6][7]
Middle East Eye and Index on Censorship report that the withdrawal relates to United Kingdom terrorism laws and Rooney's support for Palestine Action. The Indian Express also noted the boycott of Rooney's books in the United Kingdom market. [4][5][8][10]
In response to the situation, hundreds of authors and supporters signed a letter calling for government action to support Rooney and her publisher Faber, The Bookseller reported. The Guardian separately published a commentary describing Rooney's position on Palestine as brave and humane. [2][3][9]
Rooney is the author of four novels, including Conversations with Friends, Normal People, Beautiful World, Where Are You, and Intermezzo. As FTMQ Books reported earlier, Rooney and Faber agreed to stop supplying her books to United Kingdom booksellers because British anti-terrorism legislation prevents her from receiving royalties from sales in the country due to her support for Palestine Action, which is a proscribed organisation under the Terrorism Act 2000. [11][15][16]
