Irish author Sally Rooney and her publisher Faber have agreed to stop supplying her novels to booksellers in the United Kingdom, according to statements from the author to BBC News and the Guardian. The decision follows legal complications surrounding Rooney's continued support for Palestine Action, a direct action group that is a proscribed organisation in the United Kingdom. [1][2][3][4][6]

Rooney stated that further publication of her work in the country could constitute a serious criminal offence, as reported by BBC News. According to reports from the Guardian and Literary Hub, the author can no longer receive royalties from United Kingdom sales because of British anti-terrorism legislation. The Guardian also reported that Rooney cancelled a planned trip to the United Kingdom due to fears of arrest. [3][4][5]

Rooney said she had made every effort to be honest about her beliefs and was prepared to accept the consequences, the Hollywood Reporter and BBC News reported. As FTMQ Books reported earlier, the paperback release date for her novel Intermezzo in the United Kingdom has been frozen as part of the agreement with Faber. [3][7][13]

Rooney is best known for her novels Normal People, Conversations With Friends, and Intermezzo, BBC News and the Guardian reported. The withdrawal of her titles marks a significant disruption in the United Kingdom publishing market for one of the region's most prominent literary authors. [3][4]
