Author Emily St. John Mandel joined host Kerri Miller for MPR News's Talking Volumes event on November 4, MPR News reported. The discussion focused on her novel Exit Party. According to MPR News, the dystopian novel is set in the year 2031 following the complete collapse of the United States. [1]

The novel Exit Party, published in 2026, was inspired by a shelved adaptation of her 2020 book The Glass Hotel. The narrative is set in Los Angeles and Paris. It features returning characters from her previous books, including The Singer's Gun and The Glass Hotel. [4]

Mandel's earlier speculative fiction includes the 2014 novel Station Eleven, which depicts a troupe of performers two decades after a devastating pandemic. MPR News noted that the book appeared six years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Station Eleven has been translated into more than 30 languages and adapted into an HBO Max limited series. [1][2][5]

Mandel began her publishing career with Last Night in Montreal in 2009, followed by The Singer's Gun in 2010 and The Lola Quartet in 2012. Her 2020 book The Glass Hotel was chosen for Barack Obama's reading list, and her April 2022 novel Sea of Tranquility debuted at number three on The New York Times Best Seller list. [2][5]
