Daou Kiwoom Group has been selected as the preferred bidder to acquire South Korean publisher Munhakdongne, according to reports by Seoul Economic Daily, Financial News, Maeil Business Newspaper, and Chosun Ilbo. Shareholders have agreed to sell a 100 percent stake in the firm to the group. Seoul Economic Daily reported on October 24 that founder and largest shareholder Kang Tae-hyung, whose legal name is Kang Byung-sun, informed approximately 100 employees of the decision. [1][2][3][4][5]
Munhakdongne is South Korea's largest trade book publisher, as Seoul Economic Daily and Maeil Business Newspaper both reported. Seoul Economic Daily noted that Kang said he searched for a buyer that respects traditional publishing work. Daou Kiwoom Group was also recently named the preferred bidder for the JoongAng Ilbo newspaper, according to Chosun Ilbo, Maeil Business Newspaper, and Seoul Economic Daily. [1][3][4][5]
The prospective acquisition of Munhakdongne follows Daou Kiwoom Group's recent move to acquire the JoongAng Ilbo, Chosun Ilbo and Maeil Business Newspaper reported. Seoul Economic Daily noted that taking over one of South Korea's best-known literary houses alongside the newspaper would reshape the country's media and publishing landscape. [1][4][5]
The publisher established the Munhakdongne Young Writer's Award, which was awarded to South Korean author Choi Eun-young in 2014 for her short story Shokoui miso and again in 2017 [7]. Choi began her literary career in 2013 [7]. [7]
