The Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2027 is scheduled to begin on January 7, 2027. The Daily Asian Age, Prothom Alo English, Dhaka Tribune, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, The Financial Express, and New Age BD all reported that Bangla Academy announced the new opening date in a media statement on October 18, 2026. [1][4][5][6][7][8]
The decision to adjust the schedule was taken on October 13, 2026, during a meeting at Bangla Academy. According to the Daily Asian Age, Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury chaired the meeting, which was attended by administrators and their representatives. Bangla Academy did not specify the reason for bringing the schedule forward. [1]
The fair usually takes place annually in February. The Daily Asian Age reported that the previous edition of the fair began on February 26, after being postponed from its traditional February 1 start date due to general elections. [1]
The Ekushey Book Fair originated as a tribute to the martyrs of the Bengali Language Movement of 1952. Publisher Chittaranjan Shaha initiated the event in February 1972 by displaying 33 books. Bangla Academy itself was established on December 3, 1955, at Burdwan House in Dhaka following the language movement to promote research and foster Bengali literature. [9][10]
