The Newport Beach Film Festival will present filmmaker Aaron Sorkin with its Maverick Award on Saturday, October 17, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The event will take place on the Mainstage at Fashion Island. It will begin at 11 a.m. with a career retrospective discussion moderated by The Hollywood Reporter, which will be recorded for its Awards Chatter podcast, followed by the award presentation. [1]
The award follows the premiere and theatrical release of Mr Sorkin's latest film, The Social Reckoning, which opens in theaters on October 9 according to Variety. As FTMQ Books reported earlier, the film premiered in New York and focuses on whistleblower Frances Haugen and The Facebook Files. Variety noted that the narrative explores Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, with actor Mikey Madison, alongside Donald Trump and Jeremy Strong, who plays Mark Zuckerberg as an antihero. Collider reported that critics remain divided over the release. [2][3][12]
The new film acts as a follow-up to the 2010 movie The Social Network, which focused on the founding of Facebook. The original 2010 film was directed by David Fincher, written by Mr Sorkin, and adapted from the 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires written by Ben Mezrich. Variety noted that Mr Sorkin won an Academy Award for his screenplay for the original film. [1][2][9]
The Newport Beach Film Festival takes place annually in Newport Beach, California. The festival permanently moved its scheduling to October to position itself for the awards season. [10]
