Director Takeuchi Tetsuro is presenting his new film project, Wild Zero Overdrive, at the Tokyo Gap-Financing Market, Variety Film reported. The feature serves as a follow-up to his 1999 film Wild Zero. Japanese punk rock band Guitar Wolf stars in the project, which is being produced as a joint venture between Japan and Canada. [1]
Takeuchi stated that he is using the original film as a template while updating the story for modern audiences, Variety Film reported. The director explained that he wants to convey the energy of raw punk rock specifically because people are living in an age of artificial intelligence. [1]
The original 1999 comedy horror film Wild Zero starred Masashi Endo alongside the rock power trio Guitar Wolf. The plot follows a fan who becomes blood brothers with the band before encountering a zombie outbreak. [6]
The project presentation coincides with broader industry discussions in Japan. According to The Hollywood Reporter, TIFFCOM managing director Kaori Ikeda noted that rising global interest in Japanese culture offers significant opportunities to adapt intellectual property beyond traditional anime and manga formats. As FTMQ Books reported earlier, the Tokyo Gap-Financing Market also features other international projects seeking finishing funds during the Tokyo International Film Festival. [2][8]
